General Information

» Filtered local spring water is serviced to the property - it is absolutely crystal clear and tastes beautiful!

» Oil fired central heating and electricity are included in the rent.

» Bed linen is provided.

» Cot (with bedding and linen), high chair, baby bath, child fireguard, stair safety gate and a changing mat are all available.

» A hod of coal and loads of logs are provided free of charge for the open fire.

» Indoor and outdoor toys for children.

» One or two well-behaved pets welcome - two dog baskets are available - one large and one small. There is a small enclosed garden at the back of the cottage as well as access to the larger grounds of the property and surrounding fields.

» Non-smokers only please.

» No stiletto heels in the cottage please – they just ruin the oak wood block flooring.

» Garden safety. We want you (and any children) to enjoy every single minute of your holiday here but please do take care of yourselves and each other when you are out in the garden (and supervise the little ones at all times). It is an exciting place for children "Best hide-and-seek garden in the world" (!) but there are areas of open water and some steep drops as well as other dangers. Paths are often slippery.

» Some local maps are provided.

» WiFi - We have recently installed a special high powered signal repeater that now beams an internet signal of about 3.2 mb/sec over to Ghyll Stile Mill Cottage. Being out in the countryside and surrounded by hills, the internet signal is not always 100% reliable so we cannot absolutely guarantee connection but now we've installed this new bit-of-kit, it hasn't let us down yet.

» We provide 6 hand drawn maps of circular walks based from the cottage. You won't need your car to enjoy these.

» Overlooking a cascading stream, this 17th century watermill conversion nestles in a sheltered hollow at the foot of the magnificent Howgill Fells.

» Situated in an area noted for its spectacular scenery, this detached stone cottage has access to a unique and intriguing garden.

» There is ample off-road private parking for visitors.

» There are two duckponds and a little floatilla of ducks! Children and adult visitors are welcome to watch and feed the ducks, as well as collect any eggs.

» Paved pathways lead alongside tumbling waters to private grassed arbors and patios, where a quiet evening drink or barbecue may be enjoyed.

» The nearby fells and mountains offer hillwalkers superb scenic walks, whilst less demanding walks may be enjoyed amongst the quiet countryside which surrounds the cottage.

» The owners are keen not to intrude on the holiday of visitors, however they would be pleased to advise about activities, sightseeing etc. - if asked.

» A variety of birdlife inhabits the grounds and surrounding fells. Amongst the regular visitors to the garden are Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Song Thrushes, Siskins, Goldfinches and Nuthatches. On the local fields and fells you'll find Buzzards, Lapwings, Redwing and even an occasional Sparrowhawk. In the stream there are Brown Trout and we have had rare visits from otters and deer which are a special delight. Because of the purity of the stream water, the unspoilt nature of the ghyll and the fact that we are surrounded by an organic farm, for two years the stream was selected to receive an annual 'seeding' of 6000 tiny Salmon fry.
